Schedule Compression "Crushing Program"

Schedule Compression “Crushing Program”

  • The compression of scheduling is mostly common in work industrial such as crushing program or overlap program between two or more activities.
  • Why Accelerate (Speed-Up)- schedule compression.?
  • Finish date in the planned schedule does not meet the imposed finish date of the contract (Delay).
  • The project is behind schedule (affected by changes of design and/or weather)
  • Increase their profits
  • Stand their new job earlier

Compression Techniques

  1. Conduct Value Engineering (VE) and constructability studies.
  2. Work Overtime – More hours per day and/or more days per week – offer initiative for workers.
  3. Acquire more workers, but have a limited the space of work area.
  4. Acquire special materials.
  5. Before compression – Need to be taken the loss and shortened unexpectedly. All cost should be measured even worker is high wages or not (measured factor of cost). It will be the part of our discussion.

Example 1.

Cost Increasing Factors
Activity A, have 40 man/hour and work 8 hours per day.
Carpenter Wage (Regular hour)  = RM 10.00/hour
                               (Overtime)  = RM 15.00/hour

Calculation:

Normal Duration = 40 man-hour / 8 hour/day = 5 days

Normal Cost = 40 hours x RM10.00 = RM 400.00

In 4 days duration (Rushing by 1 day) – 10 hours/day  and 4 days finish up

The overtime per day is 2 hours/day.

So,

Crash Cost = 4 days x 8 hour = 32 hours x RM 10.00 = RM 320
                    = 4 days x 2 hour = 8 hours x RM 15.00 = RM 120

Total Crash Cost = RM 320.00 + RM120 = RM 440.00

The direct Cost of activity A increased from RM 400.00 to RM 440.00 hours/man.
Increase RM 40.00.

Overall total Crush Cost = RM 440.00 x 8 hours per day = RM 3,520.00 per day.

4days work cost = RM 3,520/day x 4 days = RM 14,080.

Example 2.

Erecting 84,000 square feet.

Estimated Daily Production (Sq)
Crew Size/MakeUp
1300
 (1 sch) , 2 lab, 1 car, 1 Car. Forman)
1660
 (1 sch) , 2 lab, 2 car, 1 Car. Forman)
2040
 (2 sch) , 3 lab, 2 car, 1 Car. Forman)
2300
 (2 sch) , 3 lab, 3 car, 1 Car. Forman)

Sch – Scaffolding, Car – Carpenter, Lab – Labor.

Labour – RM 12.00 per hour (8hour/day)
Carpenter – RM 16.00 per hour (8hour/day)
Carpenter Forman – RM 18.00 per hour (8hour/day)
Scaffolding – RM 60.00 per day (fixed)

Calculation:

Lab – RM96 per day, Car – RM128 per day, Sch – RM 60 per day, Car forman – RM 144.00 per day

Crew Size for Sch = Estimate Days (65)x (1 man x RM60) = RM3,900.

Estimate days
Crew Size (Cost,RM)
84,000sq / 1300sq = 64.6 days
= 65 days
Overall Cost = RM34,060
84,000sq / 1660sq = 50.6 days
= 51 days
Overall Cost = RM33,252
84,000sq / 2040sq = 41.2 days
= 42 days
Overall Cost = RM33,936
84,000sq / 2300sq = 36.5 days
= 37 days
Overall Cost = RM34,632
